BULKELEY Sailors Enjoy Lisbon, Portugal

Bulkeley recently completed a scheduled port visit to Lisbon, Portugal on July 4. Lisbon, a big city rich in culture and history, provided many opportunities for Sailors to enjoy their well-deserved liberty. For some sailors, their time off was spent at the Vasco de Gama Centre, one of Europe’s largest shopping malls. In the mall they had the opportunity to enjoy renowned boutiques and restaurants. Nearby to the mall is Lisbon’s Oceanarium, where visitors can explore various exotic animals, sea life, and plants. Other Bulkeley Sailors took advantage of the local weather to visit Lisbon’s historical attractions, including the Belem Tower, St. George’s Castle and Jeronimo’s Monastery, which houses the tomb of Vasco da Gama, Portugal’s famous explorer during the 15th century. As Bulkeley departed Lisbon, Sailors had the opportunity to pass by the famous Christ the King Statue and cross under the 25 de April Bridge along the Tejo River.
